THE EU-PLF BLUEPRINT

Observation in livestock farming system has changed

Simultaneously to the increasing numbers of animals per farm, livestock farming has changed.

In small farms, farmers could identify their animals individually and had enough time to perform audio-visual scoring.

When the number of animals increases, farmers have less time to observe their animals and the individual observation is no longer possible. Consequently, welfare or disease problems cannot be noticed fast enough and cause more damages more readily.

Fundamental

In this context, technology can help to quantitatively measure and manage behaviour, health and performance of animals. Technology is integrated in so called Precision Livestock Farming. Technology allows to do objective measurements versus audio-visual scoring by different human experts and offers monitoring every second, 24 hours and day and 7 days a week.
