In this study, an agricultural holding is said to be specialized if a single activity provides over two thirds of its economic output, and mixed-farming in other cases.

The share of crop-specialist holdings in total holdings remained stable at 40 % in EU-27 between 2003 and 2007. The share of livestock-specialist holdings increased from 32 % to 35 % and the share of mixed-farming holdings decreased from 26 % to 24 %.

In 2010 47 % of the holdings in EU-28 were specialised in cropping, 27 % in livestock, 24 % were mixed-farming holdings and 2 % of holdings were not classifiable.
