Methodology: focus groups in 5 countries for a SWOT analysis

Focus groups have been created in 5 countries to identify innovative mixed farming systems that have the potential to maximize economic, social and environmental performance. They conducted a SWOT analysis of the context in which MFS development will take place, at farm and territory scales.

The SWOT analysis consisted of (see figure below):

• An internal analysis of the current situation to identify strengths and weaknesses of existing systems.

• An external analysis to identify points that represent opportunities or threats to the development of innovative mixed farming.

• Strengths were organised under common themes: positive environmental impact, strengths associated with the farm business and positive social impacts.

• Weaknesses were organised under the themes: social, farm business, resource availability and supply chain. A broad range of social issues were identified for ICLS.

The 5 countries in which these focus groups took place are UK (Wales), France, Spain (Aragon), Sweden and Poland.
