What is design process?

Definition

According to Ertas and Jones (1996) cited by Martin et al. (2013), design is "the process of devising a system, component or process that does not yet exist to meet the needs of intended users".

Martin et al. (2013) split up design process into three main successive activities as described in the following animation:

Note

Remember that on the one hand, design process is driven by users' needs and on the other hand, it is constrained by available resources (such as money, time, knowledge).
