High geographical concentration in animal productions

At country level, the animal density “all animals” in the EU is characterized by large differences between countries. Moreover the recent evolution of animal's numbers (2010 versus 2000) has widened disparities. Animal densities have noticeably grown in Spain, Austria and Denmark. The level of density of Denmark has reinforced, starting from a high level. Belgium and Germany have lost ground. The steepest decline was seen in United Kingdom and Ireland.

The analysis at regions (NUTS3 territorial units) shows 35 territorial units on the total of 975 concentrate 25% of the European animal numbers (animal units) whereas they stand only for 13% of the total agricultural area. Half of the European animal units are located in 114 regions which account for 31% of agricultural area.
