Precision Livestock Farming : Student e-Course

PLF is a tool to answer the challenges of livestock production

Livestock production today has to combine several requirements such as:

  • guarantee food safety and quality

  • improve animal welfare and health

  • reduce environment impact

  • improve sustainability and efficiency

As a consequence, many variables need to be monitored during the production process at animal, farm and food chain level.

Livestock management decisions are mostly based on the observation, judgment and experience of the farmer. However, with the increased scale of the farms and the corresponding higher number of animals, it is increasingly difficult for the farmer to monitor his animals in a satisfactory way. Moreover, it is impossible for a person to monitor the animals continuously, during 24 hours a day.

The main objective of PLF is to develop technology and tools for on-line, continuous, monitoring of animals in order to better inform farmers on the current status of the animals and their environment and help them make quick and evidence-based decisions to adjust to changes in animal requirements, health and behaviour.
