Introduction

A tool has been developed within the EU-PLF project to calculate the potential value of PLF technologies at farm level.

The tool considers three levels of benefits :

  • Tangible : It is known in which area the technology has an impact (labour/milkproduction/antibiotic use) and often the technology is associated with a clear management action :

    → The tool calculates the monetary return from implementing the PLF technology.

  • Semi-tangible : the technology is expected to have direct economic effect at farm level BUT it is not possible (yet) to link it to clear areas of farm management and/or management actions :

    → The tool calculates the break-even point of the PLF technology.

  • Intangible : the added value of the PLF technology is a social value that most often cannot be expressed in monetary terms :

    → The tool assesses preferences of social and economic benefits of potential buyers of PLF technologies, using an Adaptive Conjoint Analysis.

The tool has three different versions for dairy cows, fattening pigs and broilers :
