Other animal production systems

There are other animal productions of main interest, but only two of them will be presented in the following section:

  • Goat production

Goats are small ruminants (40 to 70 kg BW), mainly used for milk and cheese production, and to a less extent, meat production.

Production is based on pastoralism systems or in-door systems. In this latest case, animal are fed forage and concentrate.

Goats are producing 600 to 800 kg per lactation with an average of 30 and 33 g/kg of protein and fat content. Saanen and Alpine breeds are some of breed used in the systems.

  • Sheep production

Sheep are used either for milk production or meat production.

In most of cases, breeds are specialized according to aim of production (meat or cheese). Feeding regimes are based on pasture regime, or indoor systems.

In Roquefort production for example, Lacaune ewes produced 250 to 300 kg milk per lactation, with 65-75 and 45-55 g/l of fat and protein content on average.
