Precision Livestock Farming : Suppliers e-course

Which stakeholders concerns in an animal production chain?

Complex and dynamic needs along the chain

Supply chain actor or stakeholder is defined as a compagny that has a production, process or distribution role in a supply chain.

The market demand for food is more and more dynamic. That is why concerns of different stakeholders and actors in the chain are in evolution to adapt themself to the market. Thus, to comply with consumer and citizens demands, information about characteristics of products, processes between stakeholders are becoming essential. In deed, transparency in the food chain is a common challenge to guarantee food quality and provenance to all consumers of food products.

In promoting and conserving competitiveness, each partner in a supply production chain has to be aware of of these following points. They need :

  • To satisfy changing and variable consumer and governmental demands, with respect to food safety, animal welfare and environmental impact of livestock activities.

  • To evaluate the acceptance of the product by the consumer : it deals with a combinaison of price, quality, safety, guarantees, regularity

  • To be competitive, supply chain partners have to coordinate and share information. Information technology and systems are essential for that.

  • To evaluate the risk along the chain by adopting risk assessment strategies form legislation, assurance programs, HACCP-based arrangerments, residue monitoring, innovative technologies, cold chain investigations, advice and education programs.

  • To limit cost and maximise benefits

  • To develop partnerships within and without the supply chain.

Specific demands and concerns can be developed for each partners along the supply chain. Here, find the main issue supported by public policy :

ExampleProduct attributes and demands from consumers

Understanding of consumers demands is essential to adapt the product to the market.

Find here the main intrinsic and extrinsic product attributes corresponding to usual consumers (and citizens) demands.

Demands concerning livestock production system are mainly focus on animal welfare and environmental impact of the production. Monitoring of animal behavior and of gas emissions is an important issue which can be integrated in PLF tools.

ComplementTransparency analysis and use of information system and technology

Coordination and information technology facilitate compliance with consumers and other stakeholders demands along the chain. Information system integrated in PLF tools is a way to have a better global analysis of the supply chain performance
