Basics principles and variables

ExampleIllustration of PLF technology for monitoring behavior of laying hens

Technology can help to quantitatively measure and manage behaviour, health and overall performance of livestock animals.

For example, PLF technology was used when EU regulations banned battery cages for laying hens, in favour of furnished cages. Observation by ethologists is required for research approach, but is too tedious and expensive to be used in practice.

An experiment was then designed to test the interest of PLF technology in comparison of the reference method based on audio-visual scoring of behavior by an ethologist.

This experiment showed that PLF could effectively replace humans. Today, standing, walking and scratching behaviors or egg laying can be classified in an on-line, automated way. Such a technology is also of interest for scientists and opens new fields of investigations.
