Some definitions

DefinitionWhat is an algorithm ?

An algorithm is a set of mathematical instructions that must be followed in a fixed order, and that, especially if given to a computer, will help to calculate an answer to a mathematical problem. This is the case in mathematical approaches, but algorithms can also be found in non-mathematical approaches.

Algorithms are largely developed and used in many cases, as for example weather forecast or video games.

DefinitionWhat is a feature variable ?

The variable that is calculated from the field measurements on the animal which are captured by sensor signals, image or sound information

DefinitionWhat is a field data ?

A lot of numbers originating from the sensors (e.g. 240 samples per second for an accelerometer), images (e.g. 25 images per second) or sound signals (e.g. 20,000 samples per second).

DefinitionWhat is a target variable ?

The target variable directly relates to the final objective of the algorithm.

In the example of an infection monitoring system, this means that the variable is a Yes/No status as to whether an animal is infected or not.

DefinitionWhat is a Gold Standard ?

State of the art scientific method to measure or score the status of the target variable
